“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” (Ps. 118:1)
Sadly, we live in a time of much ingratitude! Many people feel entitled and don’t appreciate the blessings God pours into our lives. One of the things we constantly stress with our children at New Pathways is being thankful. We regularly talk about our blessings and God’s favor toward us. We teach them to say “thank you,” help them write notes of appreciation, and encourage them to value every good gift that God gives. We want them to be grateful and live every day appreciating those who invest in their lives.
Children come to New Pathways out of difficult circumstances and situations that are often unsafe. But our children have so many things to be thankful for: food, clothing, a warm bed, a safe place to live, people who care deeply about them, and Christians who provide resources to make this possible. We remind them that the ultimate source of all these blessings is God. So we teach them to be thankful in prayers, we teach them to be thankful in worship, and we teach them to live in gratitude daily.
The most important blessing God gives is his unconditional love. His love is patient, kind, and endures forever. Daily we emphasize to our children the blessing of a God who loved us so much that Jesus died for us to reconcile us to himself and ensure that we can be with him forever. We want them to appreciate God’s love so much that they choose to honor him and bring him glory with their lives. Thanksgiving is a special time of year but it should be a way of life every day!
