Statistics indicate the United States has one of the worst records among industrialized nations regarding child abuse. There are over 3 million reports of child abuse each year involving more than 6 million children. Every 10 seconds there is a report of abuse and between four and seven children die each day. According to data, “Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.” Children are at risk and living in crisis from coast to coast in America.
Unfortunately, data reflects a serious problem in Kentucky. In 2012 there were 17,054 children who suffered some form of maltreatment in the Commonwealth. On December 7, 2014, the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services reported 7,727 children in the state foster care system. One of every two children in the system first enter under the age of 6 and 75% of the children are under the age of 12. Tragically, young children are the most abused!
Statistical data, observation, common sense, and compassion reveal the important need to help. New Pathways is working to make a difference for families by providing help and care for children in crisis. We provide a safe home meeting basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter along with emotional and spiritual support. Children are nurtured while families have an opportunity to improve their circumstances or learn new skills so the children can return to a secure environment.
